Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. raisins
  • 4 c. flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 c. butter (room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, beaten

Method

  1. Heat oven to 450°.

  2. Mix raisins with sifted flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar.

  3. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until consistency of corn meal.

  4. Gradually add buttermilk and eggs.

  5. Mix gently until just moistened.

  6. Knead lightly until smooth on a floured board and shape into a round loaf.

  7. Put dough in a greased round baking pan.

  8. With a sharp knife cut a cross in top of dough.

  9. Bake 10 minutes at 450°; reduce heat to 350° and bake 45 minutes.

  10. Cool on wire rack.

  11. Slice and dunk in a cup of hot tea.
